Stair Nosing Profiles: Residential and Commercial Choices for Vancouver Stairs

The nosing is the part of the tread the user actually steps on. Its profile decides how the stair wears, how it inspects, and how it reads.

The stair nosing is the part of the tread that the user’s foot actually contacts on the way down. It is also the first part of the tread to wear, the part the inspector looks at for code compliance, and the part the architect specified (or did not specify) in the design documents. A nosing that is wrong in profile, projection, or finish creates problems that cascade across the life of the stair.

This post walks through the nosing profiles we use on Vancouver custom stairs, when each is the right answer, and the small details that separate a nosing that ages well from one that fails.

What the nosing actually does

The nosing is the front edge of the tread, the edge that projects out over the riser below it. It provides three functions:

  1. Visibility. The nosing visually defines the edge of the tread, which helps the user place their foot correctly on the way down. A nosing with good contrast against the riser below is more visible and safer than one without contrast.
  2. Slip resistance. The leading edge of the tread is where the foot lands and where the slip risk is highest. The nosing finish, its texture, its anti-slip insert, or its profile, provides the grip at the moment it is needed.
  3. Wear surface. The nosing takes the most concentrated wear of any part of the tread because every step concentrates the load at the front edge. The nosing material and finish has to handle the wear over the life of the stair.

The code provisions on nosings reflect these functions. BC Building Code Section 9.8 addresses nosing projection, visibility (typically through contrast requirements), and slip resistance. The clauses differ between residential and commercial stairs.

Square nosing, the modern look

A square nosing is a 90-degree edge with no radius or chamfer. The visual reading is modern, clean, and architectural. The nosing reads as a horizontal plane terminating at a vertical edge with no transition.

On a steel tread, the square nosing is structurally fine and wears well. The leading edge is robust enough to absorb the daily wear without chipping, and the finish (powder coat or wet paint) holds up because there is no thin section to wear through first.

On a wood tread, the square nosing is more vulnerable. The leading edge can chip from impact (a dropped object, a foot scuffing the edge) and the finish at the corner wears through faster than the surrounding tread surface. Some clients accept this as part of the patina; others find it frustrating after a year of use.

We use square nosings on most modern feature stairs where the architectural intent calls for the cleaner edge. On stairs that see heavy use (large families, frequent entertaining), we recommend a slightly eased edge instead.

Eased edge nosing, the working default

An eased edge nosing is a square nosing with a small radius (typically 2 to 4 mm) on the leading edge. The radius is small enough that the visual reading is essentially the same as a square nosing from any normal viewing distance, but large enough to prevent chip damage at the edge.

The eased edge is the working default in our shop on most residential feature stairs. It gives the architectural intent of a square nosing without the wear vulnerability. On wood treads in particular, the eased edge meaningfully extends the life of the finish at the corner.

The radius is added as part of the tread fabrication and finished consistently with the rest of the tread surface. The cost difference from a square nosing is negligible.

Bullnose nosing, the traditional choice

A bullnose nosing is a fully rounded front edge with a semi-circular profile. The radius is typically the full thickness of the tread, producing a tube-shaped front edge.

The visual reading is traditional. Bullnose nosings appear on most pre-2000 residential stair stock and on stairs designed in classical or transitional styles. The wear profile is excellent, the rounded edge has no concentration point for chip damage, and the finish on a wood tread holds up well at the curve.

We use bullnose nosings on heritage projects (matching original profiles), on transitional designs where the homeowner wants a more traditional reading, and on stock stairs where the cost advantage of a standard profile matters.

The half-bullnose, a rounded top edge transitioning to a vertical riser, is the most common code-compliant nosing on commercial stairs because it provides the required nosing projection without the visual heaviness of a full bullnose. Many commercial pan treads with concrete topping are detailed with a half-bullnose at the nosing.

Anti-slip insert nosings

Any of the above profiles can include an anti-slip insert on the leading edge, a contrasting strip set into a routed channel on the nosing. The insert provides slip resistance at the leading edge and a visible contrast against the rest of the tread for better tread visibility.

On commercial stairs, the anti-slip insert is the standard. The insert is typically a carborundum strip in a contrasting colour, or a thermoplastic compound rated for the traffic level. The insert is set flush with the nosing surface so it does not become a trip edge.

On residential exterior stairs, the anti-slip insert is the smart choice. The Vancouver exterior environment puts a wet boot on the tread half the year, and an integral anti-slip insert at the nosing is the most reliable slip protection.

On residential interior stairs, the anti-slip insert is uncommon because the interior environment is dry and the architectural intent usually favours a clean nosing without visible contrast. The exception is multi-family interior egress stairs, where the insert is often specified.

Nosing projection, the code dimension

The nosing projection is the horizontal distance the nosing extends beyond the riser below. BC code addresses this dimension because it affects both the usable tread run and the visibility of the tread edge.

The published clauses give a range for the projection. Too little projection reduces the tread visibility and the usable run; too much projection creates a trip hazard for users going up the stair. We size the nosing projection within the code range with a target that balances visibility and trip avoidance.

The projection has to be consistent across the run of the stair. A nosing projection that varies from tread to tread is uncomfortable to walk and reads sloppy. We control the projection at fabrication and confirm at install.

Nosing finish coordination

The nosing finish has to coordinate with the rest of the tread. On a wood tread, the finish typically runs continuously across the tread top, around the nosing radius, and onto the riser face. The finish thickness at the radius has to be the same as the tread top so the visible reading is uniform.

On a steel tread, the finish (powder coat or wet paint) runs continuously around the nosing in the same way. The finish has to be applied with the radius in mind so the coating thickness is uniform at the corner.

On a tread with an anti-slip insert, the insert’s colour and texture are coordinated with the surrounding tread finish. A glaring contrast looks utilitarian; a subtle contrast reads architectural while still providing the visibility and slip resistance the code requires.

When the nosing decision happens

The nosing decision should be made at the design stage, not at the shop drawings stage. The architect’s drawings should specify the nosing profile, projection, and any insert. The shop drawings translate that intent into the fabrication detail.

When the architect’s drawings are silent on the nosing, we make a default selection based on the project type, square or eased edge on modern projects, bullnose on traditional projects, half-bullnose with insert on commercial stairs, and confirm with the architect at shop drawing review. The selection is documented in the finish schedule.

A nosing that is changed after fabrication is expensive. The tread has to be re-machined or replaced. Catching the decision at the design stage avoids the rework.
